The Coffee / CBD Relationship

The caffeine in coffee increases your perception of energy because it temporarily blocks creation the transmitter adenosine. Less adenosine means more energy.

On the other-hand…

The CBD from hemp may promote a non-psychoactive change of state because it upregulates the endocannabinoid system. Increased exogenous cannabinoids may restore balance to a depleted endocannabinoid system.

Does caffeine and CBD play nicely together?

It would appear that CBD and/or endocannabinoids are essential to the “maintenance and recovery of caffeine reinforcing behavior” [2]. A more direct study suggests that endocannabinoids may allow caffeine to have a stress-reducing effect [3]. However, when cannabinoids are low, the rug may be swept out and greater levels of stress may occur from caffeine consumption.

From our perspective, opting for CBD coffee may be mentally akin to l-theanine's body-effect relationship with green tea. Meaning, CBD may be able to optimize the effect of caffeine by buffering against stress caused by endocannabinoid depletion. While in l-theanine’s case, excessive heart rate variance and elevated blood pressure.

CBD and l-theanine will likely make a great tag-team duo in the future for savvy coffee hackers.

How CBD Coffee Should Be Made

CBD infused coffee has been rising in popularity, shining the spotlight brighter on the positive union coffee and CBD can share.

However, a few facts are overlooked which is why KANIBI doesn’t infuse our CBD oils directly into coffee beans.

The potential problems with CBD Infused beans:

  • Inaccurate standardization. Each coffee bean is unique, yet CBD infused coffee beans are prepared in bulk. This invites varied CBD dosages across beans, servings, and batches.
  • CBD temperature denaturization. CBD is not immune to high temperatures, and it is unclear how much CBD is altered or destroyed during the coffee brewing process [1].
  • Open-air oxidization. Unlike a well-sealed glass bottle or embedded gel capsules, coffee grains spend a lot of time exposed to air. This invites further deterioration of CBD oils.

Unless extreme measures are taken to ensure standardization, temperature control during brewing and proper storage – CBD infused coffee may not be nearly as effective as it should be. Do you get a discount for this? Not likely.

The right way to make CBD Coffee:

We believe that CBD should be added to coffee after the brewing process and not before. This will ensure that your CBD is not exposed to the peak temperatures involved in the brewing process (which varies machine to machine).

How to add CBD Oil to coffee – blend your CBD oil with your creamer or milk of choice and then add this blend to your coffee. You can use unflavored or your desired flavor of CBD tincture.

Since CBD Oil is a fat, it is best to first blend it with like-fats. This will give you a better standardization which can then be homogenized as one into your coffee.

What about black coffee?

No harm, no foul. For black coffee, you can add your desired dose of CBD directly to your cup, or take separately alongside.

CBD will naturally separate from coffee over time.

Since CBD is an oil, it will rise to the top and separate from coffee if given the opportunity. This is natural and completely fine. You can either drink as-is or re-blend (homogenize) into your coffee.

CBD infused coffee doesn’t need to be fancy – a dash of full spectrum CBD oil tincture in a cooling cup of black will do just fine. However, for those of you looking to enjoy a cup of coffee like your first hot chocolate on a snow day, here is a fine selection.
